10-1-B-O-1......THE AEROPLANE, AUG. 22, 1941 .....Roughly equivalent to our 'Flying' magazine of WWII, this is the British counterpart.....rarely seen here in the 'States, this magazine is a wonderful read, as we can see the British perspective of America and WWII in general..........this is a special issue to us 'Yanks', as in this issue, the BOEING B-17 FLYING FORTRESS is introduced!....by Aug. 1941, through the lend lease act, many B-17's had already been delivered to the Brits, and at least one complete RAF Squadron was operating them.....its fascinating to read the English opinion of the B-17......they found it built 'more robust then refined'......and interestingly, they credit the plane's best attribute as its ability to fly very high on a mission- 32,000 to 36,000'- much higher than they say the current German fighters can fly......in fact they mention the plane would be safe to fly on day raids......(they fail to mention that the Lancaster apparently was not safe to fly on day raids!)......they seem quite intrigued with the idea of a ;turbo-supercharger'- apparently current Brit bombers did not incorporate this technology (or use a Norden bomb-sight!).......wonderful magazine has articles on the Short Stirling, large advertiements with Spitfires, Hawker Hurricanes, German Biplane fighters in Russia, how to se the difference between a Bristol Beaufighter and a Cessna T-50, a somber tally on this week's air losses of the RAF,Luftwaffe, and Italians.....most sadly, the Brits suffered the most losses......an amazing magazine considering the desperate time for Britain.....46 pages, 8" by 11.5" in good condition.....$25 ***photo of British RAF Captain commanding the B-17*** |
