9-49-C-M-5.......CONSOLIDATED PBY CATALINA DISPLAY........Attractive original display of three items encased behind glass in wood frame: 1. Wings Cigarette identification card, in color, with description on reverse, showing a pre-WWII marked PBY Catalina in-flight- excellent condition. These were sold one per in a pack of cigarettes (when cig's were fashionable!) and the idea was that you would buy enough cig's to collect an entire series of more than 50 different airplanes. 2. Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 Engine data plate with US Navy Anchor acceptance stamp, used, polished, in good condition. This engine was the primary installation of the PBY, a 14 cylinder, 2 row engine that was probably the most proven engine design of WWII- different varients powered the C-47 and B-24 among others. 3. Curtiss-Wright R-2600-35 engine data plate, with USAAF bureau acceptance date of (19)43. Most interesting to history buff's after WWII, the PBY began a second life as a fire-bomber, due to its low speed handling, weightlifting, and of ocurse amphibious capabilities. The plane was deemed underpowered for such operations, and the Curtiss Wright R-2600 was used to replace the P&W. There were a number of conversions, but the -35 apparently was one of these. In good, used condition, and shows its age. We obtained this display some time ago from a WWII PBYCatalina Captain, and I suspect these items are original specifically from a PBY Catalina (engine data plates logged time in the plane...)....A very unique historical display that probably belongs in a museum....8"x13" frame shows age, but overall very good condition........$85 |
